Dr. Chandran’s research is largely in the broad area of materials research including physical/mechanical metallurgy, materials processing, with particular emphasis on theoretical and experimental investigations on metallic materials, development of novel Li-ion battery electrodes, nanostructured ceramics, coatings, titanium alloy systems and novel structural material concepts.  His research has been supported by NSF, AFOSR, ARL, ARO, DoE, DARPA, ARPA-E, US Magnesium, Ortho Development Corporation, METSO etc.  The research includes basic science and fundamental explorations as well as industrial problem solving.  Also consults for industry on engineering failure analysis of structures, components and devices. Author or co-author of over 160 published articles and over 100 technical presentations and 3 US Patents awarded. As research advisor, supervised the research of 3 post-doctoral fellows, 20 PhD students, 10 MS students and guided 10 undergraduate students in their summer research. Served in several thesis committees at the University.
