Workshop on Digital Image Correlation for Mechanical, Materials, Civil and Aerospace, Solids and Structures

Unified platform for Indian Structural Integrity

A Comprehensive Course on Hardware and Software Aspects of the Method

  • Indian Structural Integrity Society is organizing a two-day workshop on digital image correlation method, for deformation and strain measurements at multiple length scales for constitutive parameter estimation, failure and fracture toughness studies.
  • The goal of the workshop is to introduce the hardware and software aspects of method, including how to build a simple optical imaging setup, calibration, and processing the images using commercial and open source codes to extract deformation and strain.
  • The attendees will get to setup and perform 2D-DIC experiments and process the data during the workshop using commercial and open source software. Post this workshop, you should be able to use DIC for your own work with simple hardware.
  • We cordially invite researchers and students in the broad areas of structural integrity from Mechanical, Materials, Civil and Aerospace, to attend the workshop.

Tentative Schedule for the two-day workshop:

Day 1: Introduction to DIC (1 hr); measurement of strain in mechanics of materials (1 hr); hardware requirements and setup (1 hr); case studies on mechanical, materials, civil and aerospace problems involving micro, macro and high-speed imaging (3 hr).

Day 2: Hands-on setup of 2D-DIC imaging optics for a tension/compression experiment and benchmarking (3 hr); inhomogeneous strain measurement in a 2D solid with or without a crack (3 hr)

Workshop Organizers:

  • Prof. Krishna Jonnalagadda, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
  • Prof. Praveen Kumar, Indian Institute of Science
