Felicitation function honoring Dr. R. Sunder, Past President of the Indian Structural Integrity Society (InSIS)

Unified platform for Indian Structural Integrity

A Historic Milestone for India in Structural Integrity!

History has been written—and it is a moment of immense pride for India’s engineering and scientific community.

It was a privilege to participate in the felicitation function honoring Dr. R. Sunder, Past President of the Indian Structural Integrity Society (InSIS), and the distinguished Inter-Laboratory Study (ILS) Team for achieving a landmark global milestone—the successful publication of ASTM E3490, the first ASTM standard of its kind developed with leadership from India.

This remarkable accomplishment is the result of an extraordinary international collaboration led by Dr. R. Sunder (BiSS, Bangalore), along with Dr. Andy Rosenberger (AFRL, USA), Prof. Vikram Jayaram (IISc, Bangalore), Prof. Praveen Kumar (IISc, Bangalore) and more than 30 researchers from 14 institutions, culminating in the publication of ASTM E3490: Test Method for Intrinsic Threshold Stress-Intensity Factor for Near-Tip Residual Stress on 8 April 2026.

Developing an ASTM standard demands years of rigorous experimentation, inter-laboratory validation, technical consensus, and unwavering commitment. This achievement demonstrates the world-class capabilities of Indian researchers and marks a significant advancement in the fields of fracture mechanics, fatigue, residual stress, and structural integrity.

Heartiest congratulations to Dr. R. Sunder and every member of the Inter-Laboratory Team for this outstanding contribution. Their work will inspire future generations of engineers and scientists while strengthening India’s global leadership in materials engineering and structural integrity research.

A proud day for InSIS. A proud day for Indian science. A proud moment for the nation.
